How would you feel if spring break wasn’t a thing anymore? Years ago before the pandemic BCPS had switched to just a four day weekend for Spring Break but they brought a full week Spring Break back in 2020 so lucky for all of us in the six years since we’ve returned from the pandemic we’ve gotten to enjoy a 10 day Spring break.
As the final school bell rings for spring break today, teachers and students will exit the building for 11 days of a mental break from the grind of schoolwork. “Spring break is a chance to relieve us of our stress. Even if it’s only a week, even just a few days can help, especially if we’re busy balancing so many things like jobs with school. It just helps to get a little off your shoulders for a bit,” shares Adam Moreno.
This year, spring break is a day and a half longer than it typically has been in the past. It’s a chance to get out and enjoy the warming weather, explore new things, and distract ourselves from the stress that comes with working and school.
It’s a time to rest up and recharge before we all head back April 13 to tackle the fourth quarter and for many of us testing with state testing, AP testing, final exam testing. Many use the time on hobbies, for some teachers working more, and others, especially teachers, travel over the break.
KHS student Ashley Garcia shares, “Honestly, the chance to sleep in and not worry about homework for a week sounds amazing. I’m hoping to be able to spend time with my family. I’m hoping to learn how to cook a few more dishes that aren’t just pasta or sandwiches. My parents are willing to teach me, so I’m planning on spending more time in the kitchen trying to learn new recipes. The thing I love about spring break is the warm weather. I love how everything starts to feel warmer and the days are longer. It’s the perfect time to relax outside with friends and go outside.”
Spring break is a perfect time of the year when academic pressures as they’re just heating up with the end of the year approaching can melt away for at least a week. The beauty of spring break lies in its flexibility, it’s time to tailor your days to whatever brings you joy and helps you recharge, giving you energy to finish the school year strong.
Junior David Harriston is looking forward to the break. “I am excited about the school break. I can spend more time with friends and family. I hope to go out and travel to other places during spring break. My favorite thing about spring break is how much closer it is to summer. And it’s a sign that school is close to going onto a longer break which makes me happy.”
Think of spring break as a deep breath in the middle of a long run. It’s that pause button we all desperately need, a chance to step back from books and just be. Whether it’s road trips, lazy afternoons, or catching up with friends, it’s about hitting a reset and remembering what we enjoy outside of school. It’s a perfect way to recharge and come back to tackle two more months of school with renewed energy to finish the year strong.
