The coming of Spring are the first steps out of the bitterness of winter. It can either come six weeks early or six weeks late depending on whether a groundhog can see his shadow. The birds start singing, there’s a cool breeze within the air, but it also starts allergies up again which is a major downside for lots of people.
The beginning of Spring is a very odd process, as due to folklore we rely on what a groundhog does to determine how soon we’ll see Spring which is just as inaccurate as he is accurate; yet it’s a tradition we don’t seem to want to part with. If the groundhog doesn’t see its shadow then Spring is near but the theory goes if it sees the shadow then get ready for more winter. This is normally decided on February 2, but whether he does or doesn’t see his shadow the Spring equinox typically falls on March 20-21. Around that official mark of Spring, we can all start to feel a little more confident we’ll start to see Spring like weather as well.
Spring is normally the season of life and rebirth, and that’s a thing of nature itself. Plant life such as flowers, trees, and grass start growing again as they are receiving better amounts of sunlight and better temperatures to grow. That’s not the only thing coming back to life, as plenty of mammals like bears, bats, and frogs come out of hibernation. Birds build nests and insects, bees, and butterflies are seen more.
There are some spring favorites all over the state, such as the most popular Spring holiday Easter. Yet there are even more Spring anticipations around the country as plenty of national parks reopen for the season because they are filled once more with beautiful flowers for everyone to see. People start making plans for the warmer months of summer.
Kenwood student Samuel Barahona-Fernandez, has plenty of feelings and opinions towards Spring. Samuel doesn’t like how Spring normally brings out mosquitos or the pollen, but then again who does like it? However, there are several things he looks forward to about Spring. “I like how the sun tends to go down later on in the day so it feels like the sun is outside more. I also like being able to go outside to the park more and overall spending more time outside,” he shares.
Lastly a tradition of Samuel is that his family spends more time having cookouts and he enjoys repairing his family’s garden while it’s still warm. Senior Kayla looks forward to all the green and color that comes back to life. “I look forward to the flowers blooming in Spring,” she shares. Here at KHS out in our courtyard you’ll see our environmental club hard at work after school preparing our gardens and flower beds for the Spring season.
Spring may bring bugs and allergies but most can’t resist the appeal of warmer and sunnier days and the anticipation of summer around the corner.
