As the new year begins, students are encouraged to set clear and attainable goals to help them stay focused and motivated.
Mrs. Taylor, Kenwood’s College and Career Research Teacher, says using SMART goals – specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound – helps students create goals that are meaningful and realistic. These goals can apply to school, jobs, personal life, or sports and help students prioritize what matters the most to them.
“SMART goals help students stay organized and understand exactly what they’re working towards,” shares Mrs. Taylor. “They also make progress easier to track.”
Students can be supported in this by using checklists to monitor their progress and adjust goals once they are achieved. Teachers also recommend writing goals down then breaking them up into smaller steps to help students feel accomplished as they meet each step.
Another important skill students are encouraged to learn as they work towards their goals is self-advocacy. Asking for help in class, at work, or anywhere else can help students recognize challenges and make sure they’re getting the help they need to avoid falling behind.
Setting goals at the start of the year gives students a fresh start and a new perspective, especially after all the distractions of the holidays. With the right support and planning, students can turn their goals into long-term success.
