When we returned to school last Fall, students found the courtyard outside the MPR full of patio like furniture and yard games. Students enjoyed it last Fall and now that Spring is here, it has reopened for students to enjoy their lunch or for teachers to take their classes.
There’s a variety of different types of patio furniture for students to lounge on with some being shaded and some not. Activities like ladder golf, connect 4, and corn hole are available; however, the games and activities are limited because many classrooms overlook the courtyard and they don’t want to cause disturbance to those classes.
Kenwood’s Community School Facilitator Mr Goldbeck was the one behind making the courtyard an enjoyable space for staff and students to enjoy. “Most of the furniture that was around in the fall was donated. We have a lot more that were purchased by the community school grant that we assembled to put out this Spring.”
The community school grant helped purchase new picnic tables, umbrellas, adirondack chairs, and even trash cans. New garden beds were also purchased for Mr. Woodward’s environmental club. Several of their garden beds are in the courtyard. Mr. Goldbeck adds, “Eventually this Spring we will be able to have some school events and some classes held out there also.”
Another new addition to the courtyard will be a large sunshade to help make it more comfortable as it gets sunnier and warmer. The courtyard reopening gives students a great opportunity to enjoy their lunch and the nice spring weather that’s to come.
However, Mr. Goldbeck reminds students, “We need to keep it clean though and that’s everyone’s responsibility.” Be sure to enjoy time out there this Spring.
