This past winter in February 2026 we got to enjoy a break from the cold and politics with the winter Olympic games. The 2026 Winter Olympics brought athletes from all over the world together to compete in winter sports like skiing, snowboarding, and ice hockey. The games took place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo from February 6th to February 22nd. Thousands of athletes competed for medals while representing their countries. The Olympics are a sign of global comradery and sportsmanship through the showcase of skills of a country’s top athletes.
The modern Olympic games were first celebrated in Greece among athletes from 14 nations in Europe. In 2026 there were many new and old athletes that put up good performances and gained popularity.
KHS students and staff alike enjoy watching the Olympic games. Morakinyo, a student-athlete at Kenwood shared, “If you do sports it’s kind of good to have a role model to aspire to and see yourself in their shoes.” According to the Kenwood athlete the Olympics appeal to a younger demographic because it helps kids and teens find someone that they can connect with.
People get exposed to the Olympics and gain interest at different points in their lives. “Since I was a kid and began running track I started watching the Olympics and thrived to be like them.” People who personally participate in sports tend to connect to the Olympics because they see themselves as the athletes.
For many people, the Olympics are exciting to watch because of being able to see some of the best athletes in the world. Mrs. Rodier shared, “I think it can be exciting, especially if you know something about the sports.” Fans also often closely follow their favorite events and athletes during the games.
The Olympics are also known for bringing people from different countries together. Mrs. Rodier explained, “I think any competition can do that and this is more of a ‘healthy’ competition where everyone respects each other and their talents regardless of where they come from. Many believe the games help promote respect and unity between nations.
However, some think that the Olympics are not as important as they once were. “Honestly, a lot of Olympic athletes are also professional athletes, so I don’t see them as important,” Mrs. Rodier stated. Despite that opinion, millions of viewers still watch the competitions and support the athletes from their country.
In all, the Olympic games are a great global event that highlights competition, talent, and international unity.
