March is Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day took place on March 8, 2025. This day and month in general is a time to celebrate the contributions women have made in history, culture, and overall society.
International Women’s Day was created March 8th, 1908 by Clara Zetkin. She proposed that every year on this day, women should be celebrated to fight for their basic human rights and equality. In addition to this, National Women’s History Month was created in March 1987. This adds to International Women’s Day, but instead for a single day it is a whole month of celebrating and supporting women.
International Women’s Day and month is for any and all women, to show them recognition for what they bring to the world. However, this month was not only created tocelebrate and honor women’s achievements and contributions, but to recognize the struggle anddifficulties that women have gone through in receiving equal rights. This day is made for bringing awareness to these issues and bringing women together in supporting each other. As most of us know, women were not allowed to vote until 1941, however men were able to vote since 1870. This is just one example of how women weren’t given equal rights.
Junior Brianna Nelson adds, “I believe it’s important because we get to celebrate the under recognized accomplishments and contributions of women in society,” She also shares that “Women’s History Month does need more recognition, but more importantly women should be recognized everyday outside of this month too.”
Though Women’s History Month is often thought to recognize women in history, many don’t want to forget the everyday women that make significant contributions to their lives. “For Women’s History month I want to thank my sister for being so kind and cherishing and stepping up to do a lot of the things she does for me and being the independent woman she is,” shares Harlym Spence.
Many others feel the same about their mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and so many of the everyday women in their lives. Junior Sarah Sam adds, “Women’s History Month is important because women are the foundation of everything.”
As National Women’s History month comes to an end take the time to learn about your favorite women, and don’t forget to love and appreciate the amazing women in your life every day!
