Black history Month is often seen as just remembering Black history, but I think it should
also be honoring what black history has done for us today. Sometimes we forget that the
history of black people didn’t only impact the people back then but it’s impacting us now
and will be tomorrow.
The history of black people is what makes us now have access to well-payed jobs,
healthcare, non-segregated schools, even better housing. It’s not even just black people in
the U.S, but all over the globe.
We may not realize but black people have influenced a lot of things in our daily lives. It can
be the jewelry we wear, the clothes, the music, our hair etc. without realizing it. Music, for
example a lot of instrumentals, the drums, and the beats, in a lot of songs we hear today
are from some black culture whether we know it or not.
Did you know most of our medicines were developed based on research of black woman’s
cells? These cells are called the HeLa cells that came from Henrietta Lacks. Her cells are
what has been the blueprint of medicine research for 70 years now; Her cells are still alive
which has not ever recurred since, and not a lot of people know about her story. Her cells
are what is going to continue to help the line of medicine for today and tomorrow.
Black people have a lot for many different things, things that are life changing and we need to give grace to that. In conclusion, Black History Month shouldn’t just be about remembering but also honoring and treasure what our history has done for everyone.
