We talk about gratitude usually around Thanksgiving, but how do we show it? Thanksgiving always falls on the fourth Thursday in November, allowing us to have a yearly chance to be able to give thanks to the people and things we are grateful for.
The origin of why we celebrate thanksgiving, according to archives.gov, is because in the year 1621, wthe English Pilgrims and Wampanog people shared a harvest feast in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
The variety of foods that are shared at the table on Thanksgiving day are different. According to foodtimeline.org, the traditional foods eaten on Thanksgiving are turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potato pie, and more. However, there are many different dishes eaten in different homes.
Kenwood student Sarah C shares, “In my home, we usually eat chicken and rice with lots of side dishes, like mashed potatoes and macaroni salad. Another student named Eclipse adds, “Usually I make curry. I make many traditional foods from many places but my favorite is mac and cheese.”
Thanksgiving is the time of the year where people usually give thanks, whether it be to people in their family or any friends that made their year better. KHS Jenesis shares, “I’m thankful for my mom. She’s always there for me, supporting me in everything I do, and giving me unconditional love. Her presence in my life is invaluable.”
Another student Tafummi adds “I’m thankful for my best friend and my family. She has always been there for me, supporting and encouraging me through everything, and my family constantly shows me love and care. I truly appreciate them all.”
People don’t only have to give thanks to others, but to experiences that they were able to have which they are extremely grateful for. A student shares that “Being able to see my great uncle before he passed because I was able to tell him I loved him” was an experience this year she was thankful for.
Overall, Thanksgiving is more than just a holiday that is celebrated by sharing a big traditional meal, it’s a time people take to reflect on many blessings in their lives that they are grateful for. Thanksgiving allows us to share time with the people we love, appreciate what we have, and express gratitude toward the people and moments.
