It’s Teacher Appreciation Week not just at Kenwood or across BCPS, but the whole country!
Being a teacher can be very stressful and draining. Teachers do a lot for their students that they don’t have to do. They put in so much effort for their students simply because they love their students. But Teacher Appreciation Week allows teachers to see how appreciated they are. Teachers make a difference in students’ lives. They don’t deserve just a week of appreciation but so much more than that. They guide the future.
Teacher Appreciation Week dates back to 1953 when First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded Congress there needed to be a day to honor and recognize America’s teachers.
This year Teacher Appreciation week fell May 5-10. “Teachers have the power to make a positive and even negative impact on a students’ life, but nonetheless, it’s a big impact. Depending on how a teacher teaches and acts toward a student inside and outside of class can heavily impact a student’s way of thinking and sense of self. A teacher can uplift a student, giving them confidence which they could carry on for the rest of their lives,” shares junior Tori’ S.
Students throughout Kenwood took time to leave their teachers handwritten cards and reflected on the value of how teachers help promote their individual growth. “Teachers help students overcome difficult situations, serve as mentors and role models, and even help to build up student’s self-esteem and help them feel comfortable with themselves,” adds Alize.
To honor Kenwood’s teachers, the administrative team provided lunch on Monday with a plethora of Texas Roadhouse rolls which are a favorite amongst about anyone that has ever visited Texas Roadhouse. Wednesday morning teachers came into their classrooms to personalized messages of gratitude on their whiteboards from the KHS admin team.
There’s still plenty of Teacher Appreciation Week left to thank a teacher! They don’t ask for much but a few kind words can go a long way so be sure to take a little time to express your gratitude. Make them a card or just simply tell them how much you appreciate them. They make a difference in your life; you can make a difference in theirs.
