Kenwood High School Friday night lights are a highlight of a Bluebird’s school year. The varsity football players are preparing the tunnel. The cheerleaders are preparing their 8 counts and tying their cheer shoes. The student section is filling in with fans ready to cheer on their Bluebirds.
But things are a little different this year. First, Kenwood High School is waiting on the completion of their new turf field this year which is an amazing opportunity for the upcoming football seasons, but unfortunately means except a home game here on the CCBC Essex campus next week, all games are away until Homecoming and senior night later in October.
If people were uncertain about this season due to the loss of last year’s seniors, the first two games should have put those worries to rest. Kenwood’s varsity football team has put in the work in the off season and already have started off the season 2-0.
In their game against Parkdale, they won the game 14-8. Coach Ruocco was very proud of this game and how Coach Swain and his team jumped out to a 14-0 lead. Cameron Baker took the lead on the field against Parkdale, with one touch down, three receptions, ninety eight receiving yards, and thirty three yds/rec.
In their game, Kenwood vs. Dulaney, the Bluebird won 26-7. Malachi Lee jumped on a fumble recovery in the opening kickoff to run it back for a touchdown. Another touchdown was run in by running back Jahkell Moore. Quarterback Jayvon Fahie had a great game with a completion percentage over 53.3%. He passed for 183 yards. He did have one interception but two touchdowns.
Players and fans alike are looking forward to this season’s home games. The hope is the turf will be completed in early October but there is no guarantee for sure when the field will be ready. Students are hopeful the Homecoming game on October 13 can be played on their new home turf field.
In Kenwood High School, we value sports and the experience it gives our student athletes. Kenwood’s coach, Mr. Swain shares, “I’m excited for this new season. We have some new faces as well but it’s going to be a good season.”
We are looking forward to an amazing season of cheering on our Bluebirds! You can catch them tonight September 14 at Milford Mill High School at 6pm!
