Kenwood Wrestler Advances to State with 99 wins

Staff Reports

A big goal for wrestlers is to the 100 win plateau.

“It’s not an easy thing to do,” states Kenwood’s Athletic Director Coach Ruocco. But Kenwood wrestler senior Kelly Bailey is headed to the State Championships after advancing through Regionals this past weekend at Aberdeen High School. He enters States with 99 wins! One more to go to reach that 100 win plateau.

Kelly has committed to attending Frostburg State University next Fall and is not just a varsity wrestler but also a lacrosse player for Kenwood. Bailey is also one of Kenwood’s nominees for the prestigious McCormick’s Unsung Hero Award.

Kelly has had a special senior wrestling season.  He has a 43-6 record and entering States with 99 wins was not an easy thing to do. What makes this accomplishment much greater is Kelly lost his entire 2020-21 wrestling season to the Covid Pandemic.  This was devastating for all winter athletes that season.

“If you have met Kelly, he’s about the most humble and nicest person you’d ever want to talk to.  If you get a chance to give him a congrats or some encouragement, I know he’d appreciate it and he’s a champion in my book whether he hits the 100 wins or not!” shared Coach Ruocoo.
