Kenwood Basketball Beats Chesapeake with a Buzzer Shot

Linda Neewary, Sophomore

Kenwood boys varsity basketball team had a tremendous win last night on January 15  against rival school, Chesapeake High.

With around 10 seconds left, Chesapeake scored a basket to go ahead by one point with a few seconds left in the game. Chesapeake fans stormed the court, ready to celebrate their team’s win,  but with only  seconds left sophomore Devin Adams threw up a 3 point shot right as the buzzer went off, giving the Bluebirds a 2 point lead to win the game!

Devin Adams feels like the team played a great game yesterday and it showed in the intensity of the gym as fans had to wait until the final second to see who would pull out the win. “It was a good intense game,” shared Adams. Adams, a student his peers call a humble kid, was reluctant to make a big deal out of his moment of fame and glory. He just enjoys playing the game and wanted to see his team beat their rival. He gives credit to his teammate for getting the ball to him in just enough time.  “The pass was really good on Jyairre’s  part because he knew how much time was left.”

Junior Jyairre Anderson, and the rest of the team have played with determination this season, winning their past four games of the new decade as recently covered in The Avenue News The Bluebirds struggled in the first half but they came out and played hard the second half. Anderson was the one to pass the ball off to Adams as they made that final stretch down the court, “It was a clutch shot but I believed in him,” shared Anderson.

Kenwood students were extremely excited to see their fellow peer Adams’ buzzer 3 pointer as a trending topic on social media. Adams’ buzzer shot for Kenwood has been viewed on House of Highlights Instagram page almost 1.2 million times as of this morning.”The gym excitement was amazing and something the kids will remember the rest of their lives,” shared Principal Brian Powell. Both the students and players enjoyed the game and have high hopes that there will continue to be big wins for the rest of the season with this team’s determination not to give up until that final buzzer. The support from student body, the coaches, and family will hopefully keep them energized and going as the season continues. “We all worked together as a team and came up with a win,” Anthony Ortiz shared proudly.

Be sure to catch this awesome team at their next game tonight at Kenwood verse Perry Hall. JV starts at 3:45 and varsity at 5:30.
