As Halloween gets closer, people are starting to look for fun ways to get scared. As America’s number #1 haunted attraction, Field of Screams is one of the top places to do it. Located in Mountville, Pennsylvania, Field of Screams has been open and running for about 30 years now and is known for having some of the scariest haunted attractions around. With creepy sets, live scare actors, and lots of surprises, it’s a popular spot for anyone who loves a good scare.
Co Owner, Jim Schopf shares, “When entering Field of Screams, it feels like you are entering a realm of haunted entertainment from the roaming clowns to our four haunted attractions”.
This year, Field of Screams has added some new things to 4 of their attractions to make the experience even better. The four main attractions are named Haunted Hay Ride, Den of Darkness, Frightmare Asylum and Nocturnal Wasteland. Whether you’ve been there before or it’s your first time, there are new scares waiting for you. The new changes and effects make everything even more intense. Here’s what to expect with the four attractions:
- Haunted Hayride
Originally, Haunted Hayride was just a one-wagon operation, but now it involves 11 tractors which are 35’ long and 9’ wide holding up to 80 people. The tractors used on the rides are from 1970 and are even still used on the Schopf Bros Farms. The ride takes about twenty-five minutes filled with various rooms. Blood-hungry pigs, maniacal clowns, and now a new gas station scene. Gas is everywhere spewing all over, explosions are happening left and right. The ride also includes infected creatures and a psycho executioner. The ride is a terrifying yet thrilling experience that will send goosebumps all over your entire body.
- Den of Darkness
The barn used for Den of Darkness was originally built in the early 1800’s. The building used is 3 ½ stories and has served as a farmhouse, hotel, mansion estate of Francis Worth, and a barn for the past 200+ years. Inside the walls of Den of Darkness, inexplicable deaths, missing persons reports, and disappearances have occurred. This year, Field of Screams has added a new “Study” filled with oddities collected from all over the world. The creatures throughout the den are strangely welcoming and you will be met with smells, sights, and sounds that fill your body with terror.
- Frightmare Asylum
The Applegate Mental Hospital and Asylum returns with even more terror. Once home to the criminally insane, its doctors, nurses, and inmates still haunt the walls. From therapy rooms and even twisted dentists to clowns and chainsaws, every corner brings tons of new horrors. This year, the asylum received scenic upgrades to make the place more immersive–and more terrifying–than ever.
- Nocturnal Wasteland
The Nocturnal Wasteland is a terrifying outdoor haunted forest where you walk the entire trail surrounded by demented creatures, massive scenes, and scares. From eerie ice cream trucks to Shantytown and its swamp witches, every step pulls you deeper and deeper into their dark domain. New this year, the rickety school bus high above the Haunted Hayride has been transformed into a new living quarters for the Wasteland’s twisted residents–making your walk more unsettling.
But what really makes Field of Screams are its scare actors? From bloodthirsty inmates to twisted clowns and forest dwellers, the actors bring each attraction to life with their terrifying energy. Their commitment to character makes every jump scare, scream, and chase an unforgettable moment. Eliza Gutierrez, a scare actor for the attraction Haunted Hayride shares that when being a scare actor, “You can get anxious, but the more you scare, and the more you become friends with other actors makes it better. You don’t have to be a normal person when acting, you can be crazy.”
Beyond the haunted attractions, Field of Screams delivered a full night of entertainment. Guests can shop exclusive merchandise at the Scream Shop, take on quick Escape rooms, or even upgrade to VIP status for front-of-the-line access to the attractions. The entertainment area features live music, games, food, and the Chainsaw Bar, axe throwing, and a stunning immersive new light and sound show. Field of Screams also gives back through charity events like the Zombie Fun Run, while families can enjoy kid friendly fall fun at Corn Cob Acres. With so much to see and do, Field of Screams is more than a haunted attraction–it’s a full Halloween experience.
You can check out their calendar on their website which is packed full of different events every weekend. Though scare actors roam the whole park; it’s important to remember the rules are very strict about not touching any of the scare actors even if they touch you or yell in your face. Guests can even be kicked out of the park for touching a scare actor or interacting with them in a way the scare actor did not enjoy. The rules are very strict about touching the scare actors because of safety hazards that are there.
Field of Screams will make your heart pound in your chest and the adrenaline rush to your head as the actors chase and scream at you waiting just around the corner to jump out and scare you more. The scare actors play their parts so well that nobody feels like they are at a park anymore once they start going through the attractions.
