This week, September 29th – October 3rd, is the annual Kenwood High School Homecoming week! The week is kicked off with spirit week to help gear up for the pep rally Friday afternoon and the big football game on Friday night, October 3, followed by the annual Homecoming Parade and Dance on Saturday October 4.
Along with all of these varied activities, students will also be able to vote for this year’s Homecoming King and Queen. Throughout the week, students have showed their spirit dressed as their favorite characters or the iconic BBQ dad or soccer mom and will conclude Spirit Week on Friday in their traditional school colors.
Kenwood is a huge part of the community parade on the morning of Saturday, October 4 at 10am. Kenwood’s JROTC, dance team, and school band all perform in the parade, along with our athletic teams marching throughout our local neighborhoods.
This growing tradition is definitely something that you don’t want to miss. Ms. McRae, who is the coordinator behind Homecoming festivities shares, “It is really a fun time. We encourage everyone to come out, whether you are a part of a club or not.”
Homecoming is something that students get to do out of the routine. Ms. McRae adds, “This is the one time in your life you get to do fun stuff like this.” It’s important that students get to experience something different than going to class and just doing schoolwork. It’s weeks like this that create the high school memories kids remember later.
The dance theme this year is a “Sneaker Ball” and the dance is 7-10 here at KHS. Kenwood student Amerie Jones has attended homecoming dances before and looks forward to this years. “The dance is something fun to do with your friends. It’s great to hang out at the dance but also to even enjoy the moment of getting ready and taking pictures,” she shares.
Although Homecoming is something most students look forward to, there are some students that have still never participated in the Homecoming activities but as the spirit catches on in the hallways are a little intrigued. Diana Saenz Guzman adds, “I don’t typically pay attention to Homecoming nor have I ever gone; however, I see that many people really seem to enjoy going to the dance and the football game. It sounds like a great way for students to socialize with other students.”
Whether you’ve been to multiple homecomings or haven’t participated in one yet, this is the year not to miss! It’s a great way to get the full experience of high school so dress up for spirit week, come participate in the pep rally Friday afternoon, check out your Bluebirds under the Friday Night Lights, spend your Saturday morning at the parade, then the afternoon and evening with your friends getting ready and attending the Homecoming Dance.
