Summer is here- whether you count it unofficially with Memorial weekend, the last day of school, or the Summer Solstice on June 21 this year-the end of the school year is here, the weather is warmer and nicer.
Summer represents a lot of different things to different people. For soon to be senior Breana V summertime is a time for road trips. Breana thinks, “it’s a good idea to go on road trips during summer because you can enjoy the weather and enjoy the drive there. It’s way easier to go on road trips since school’s out.” Some like Breana travel to the same place every summer while others travel elsewhere. Breana goes to Michigan to visit her family every year and enjoys time on Lake Michigan and spending time with family.
Teachers just as students travel a lot too. Ms. Glenn like Breana uses the time to see her family in Missouri. “We always spend a good week to two in Missouri but will usually hit another place on our road trip across country. This year we’re going past Missouri to Utah and Colorado,” shares Glenn.
Some students and teachers use the time to work during the summer. Students get summer jobs to save up money and some teachers teach summer school or work on curriculum while others get part time jobs outside the school system.
Others like Alex have used their summers in the past to volunteer to explore future careers she may be interested in. “I have always loved nature. I saw a local environmental group was looking for volunteers for a community garden so I signed up. We spent our days cleaning up the garden, planting vegetables, and learning about composting. One of my favorite experiences was helping with a workshop for local kids, teaching them how to plant seeds. Their excitement made me feel like I was truly making a difference.”
Whether you’re traveling, working, volunteering, or just enjoying some time for yourself and your favorite hobbies, summer is here! We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer and we’ll see you back here at KHS in August.
