Every year, students from across the county gather for a special event that brings together Functional Academic Learning Support (FALS) programs from multiple schools. Hosted at various locations including Overlea, PTAP, Chesapeake, and Kenwood, the event offers an exciting day of fun, physical activity, and friendship. It’s a unique opportunity for students who may not often interact with peers from other schools to come together in an inclusive and supportive environment.
This year on April 10 Kenwood SSA students hosted Patapsco and Chesapeake FALS students for their annual Awesome Activity Day. The event is organized and powered by the energy and enthusiasm of Kenwood’s Sports Science Academy (SSA) students. These students help run the show, setting up activities and ensuring everything runs smoothly. They are partnered with FALS students at stations, helping guide them through each game while building confidence and encouraging participation. This collaboration not only benefits the FALS students but also provides valuable hands-on experience for the sports science student volunteers.
Inside the gym, the excitement is hard to miss. There are 12 game stations set up, each offering something different and engaging. From parachute games and bowling to basketball and scooter handball, the activities are designed to be fun and accessible for everyone. Dance breaks keep the energy high, and snack breaks offer a chance to recharge and socialize. The setup ensures that each student can find an activity they enjoy while trying something new.
This event not only gives students a chance to play and connect, but also shows the power of inclusion and community. As the day ends, smiles, laughter, new friendships come from these schools coming together.
