At Kenwood High School, students take pride in joining and being part of many different Honors Societies that fit their interests. There are 9 total Honor Societies here at Kenwood, and on March 19, new students were inducted Kenwood’s various National Honor Societies.
Kenwood has National Honor Societies in English, French, Spanish, Social Studies, Science, Art, Music, Theatre, and then there’s THE National Honors Society for students that excel in all academics. That’s why we find it important to celebrate the students who fit the requirements and want to pursue a spot in any of these societies.
Kenwood’s Tri-M National Music Honor Society requires a 3.0 GPA and students to maintain A’s in all music courses taken. They must also be enrolled or involved in a music-based class or performing ensemble. This year three students were inducted in to the Tri-M National Music Honor Society.
For the National Art Honor Society, students were required to maintain a B or A average in an upper-level art course and show a dedication towards expanding their artistic practice. This year there were 10 new inductees, inducted by the co-presidents Cynthia Matzul-Saloj and Ashley Bulnes-Ramos.
Another artistic honors society at Kenwood is the International Thespian Society, which recognizes students who put their time in to produce shows and theatre productions. This year there were 7 inductees, who all had to complete a minimum of 100 hours in theatre arts, as well as maintain a GPA of 3.3 and be recommended by a minimum of 2 teachers.
Students don’t have to always join an honors society based on the arts, and they don’t always either. This year there were 15 new members inducted into the Rho Kappa Social Studies National Honors Society, which requires a 3.0 GPA in all social studies courses, good behavior in school, consistent participation, and students to be either a junior or senior. The English Honor Society inducted 27 new members! The Math Honor Society inducted 6 new members while the French and Spanish Honor Societies inducted a combined 27 new members
“Being inducted into the National Honor Society shows that you are a leader in your school and in your community. As a leader, your actions affect others. The students’ leadership position is not a position of glory and popularity, but a position of responsibility. A student leader must operate in good faith and be an example of fair play, integrity, and dependability,” Breana shared at the induction ceremony.
Becoming a part of any one of the societies at Kenwood is not impossible, but it requires hard work. All of the students who are members of a society here at Kenwood are dedicated students, and we’re excited to see what they will do for our school as well as beyond it. If you weren’t inducted this year, make it a goal for next school year.
