For second semester Kenwood welcomed a new dance teacher, Ms. Mcafee. Her first day as the dance teacher here at Kenwood began back in early February. Before she came to Kenwood she taught at Towson University and Howard Community College.
Her own dancing history is quite extensive. “It’s a long one! I started dancing professionally at 19, and kept going until the pandemic shut most of Baltimore down. I’ve performed in every style, but my favorite is modern dance. I think it feels the best,” she shared.
She plans to keep the lines of communication open and take as many suggestions as she can because she thinks the students here are passionate and motivated to express themselves through dance. With the transition from one dance teacher to another mid year, it’s been a bit chaotic for the dance program this year but they’re excited to be back on stage.
Dance students had the opportunity to show off their dance moves at the Kenwood Talent Show back in March but they will also be performing in a Spring Dance Concert on Monday, May 12.
She hopes students consider giving dance a try as they select their courses. “Even when you think you can’t adjust to trying something new you’ll never know unless you give it a try,” Ms. Mcafee shares.
“Short-term, I’d like to bring in some guest teachers and choreographers to help our dancers connect to the greater Baltimore area and perhaps go on to dance professionally themselves. Long-term, I’d like the Kenwood dance program to gain a reputation as being the most professional, passionate group of dancers in the county. No, the state. No, THE WORLD! I can’t wait to show everybody what we’re made of!”
Be sure to be on the lookout to catch Ms. Mcafee and Kenwood’ dancers in action next month and next year as the Kenwood dance program gets back on the stage.
