March is National Social Work Month, a time to honor the professionals who make a difference in our schools every day. At Kenwood, our social workers – Ms. Reaves and Ms. Kohen – go above and beyond to create a safe and supportive environment for everyone. This month, we celebrate their hard work and dedication to helping our students thrive.
Social Workers are trained mental health professionals who assist in all aspects of learning, like mental health and behavioral concerns, or academic and classroom support with parents, teachers, and admin. The School Social Work Association of America states, “School social workers are instrumental in furthering the missions of schools.”
However, Ms. Reaves and Ms. Kohen go beyond fulfilling the missions of our schools daily. Their jobs are incredibly intricate as they work to solve multi-layered concerns for Kenwood families. To start, Ms. Kohen shares “we discuss common goals, determine what are the best ways to address [concerns].” This may include helping “with emotional behavior and goals,” adds Ms. Reaves.
Sometimes, families require outside resources to promote success. Thankfully, Ms. Reaves and Ms. Kohen can connect them with “therapists, hard resources [i.e. food, clothing, shelter], substance abuse counseling, summer work programs,” and more!
Behind the scenes, they work with KHS School Community Facilitator, Mr. Goldbeck, on school programs, and they maintain the supply rack located outside of the Health suite. Ms. Reaves works on the Attendance Committee to assist chronically absent students and get them motivated to return. She explains that school social workers are the “link between home and school” as they aim to solve complex situations. Overall, Ms. Kohen shares “we want to be able to not just provide resources, but welcome the students into school and give them a safe space.”
Our School Social Workers passion for their jobs is clear as Ms. Reaves concludes, “I have always loved working with kids, and I find their resiliency inspiring… Kenwood has been the most rewarding and important school.” Additionally, Ms. Kohen adds, “I’m always interested in meeting new people, so come by or just say hi.”
All students and families are welcome to meet with Ms. Reaves and Ms. Kohen. Their offices are located within the health suite or can be contacted through email. Thank you to Ms. Reaves and Ms. Kohen for facilitating a welcoming environment and working tirelessly to support Kenwood families.
