Cross Country and track are often a sport that feels overlooked. They aren’t just about racing—they’re about growth, focus, and pushing limits. From sprints to distance, every lap offers a chance to improve and reset.
“It’s not just about speed,” says one of the runners. “It’s about the rhythm and focus.” Kenwood offers those who enjoy the competitiveness of running three seasons to participate in races. In the Fall students can participate in Cross Country which is more long distance running. In the Fall, Ayanna Alark and Jonathan Pineyro both started their running seasons off with great races in the Towson Invitational. “We had a few new runners entered the program this past season who showed great promise,” added Cross Country Coach James.
Some students running is their main athletic event but sometimes others use cross country, indoor track, or track to prepare in the off season for their next sport of the season. During the winter months Kenwood offers indoor track. In indoor track, every race, every step, brings runners closer to our goals both on and off the track. “Overall, indoor track offers a chance to focus, stay fit, and build mental and physical strength,” adds one of Kenwood’s seasoned runners.
This past winter, Myles Venable competed in the Indoor Track Regionals. Myles ran 6.68 in the 55m coming in third place and 36.69 coming in 5th in the 300m meaning which qualified Myles for the State Meet on February 18 where he competed in the 55 and the 300 meter dashes!
Kenwood Track and Field Coach Tomasura participated in track at her DIII college, as well as helped coach at the college level. ” I think the sport of track is one of the most individual sports, but is ironically more team-oriented than any other sport in some senses. While a team could have a superstar that always places 1st, it is really necessary to have a whole team that buys into the sport of Track AND Field, as the only way for a team to end up on top at a meet is to have individuals that buy into being experts in their events, but are still supportive of all their teammates.”
As a thrower, Tomasura knew where she could improve and help her team score points in the field, but also knew it was extremely important to be cheering on runners in tight races if the team wanted to place 1st overall in the team competition of a meet. “I’ve seen both sides of track and field – teams that only focus on superstars and teams that focus on the collective, and the teams that focus on the collectives are much more successful – the team I coached at the Division II level (Wilmington University), won the first CACC Men’s Track and Field Championship in team history in 2023 by bringing home points from all areas (Throws, Jumps, Sprints, Distance, etc.),” adds Tomasura.
For the third and final sports season of the year, student athletes can participate in Track and Field which includes not just the races but field events such as shot put, high jump, long jump, discus throw. Kenwood will kick off their track and field season tonight, March 25 at Parkville High School. Be on the look out for Malaija Brown in the sprints on the girls JV team, Lin Tajeken with the Discus again on the girls varsity team, Alexus and Brinae Chester with sprints for the girls varsity team, and for the boys there’s hope of Malachi Knowles having a good season with sprints on the boys JV team and for Myles Venable to return in the sprints for boys varsity team,
