Valentine’s Day originally came from a Christian feast day honoring a Martyr named “Valentine”.
Valentine’s Day is a special day when people show love and appreciation to those they care about. It is celebrated on February 14th every year. People often exchange cards, candies, and small gifts to express their feelings.
On Valentine’s Day, you might see lots of hearts, flowers, and the color red. These symbols represent love and friendship. Many people give and receive Valentine’s Day cards with sweet messages. Some even make handmade cards to make them extra special. Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples in love but for anyone you love and wish to show gratitude and affection towards.
One fun tradition on Valentine’s Day is giving and receiving valentines. These are small cards with cute pictures and kind words. Sometimes, they come with little treats like heart-shaped candies or stickers. Families and friends also celebrate Valentine’s Day by spending time together. Some people have special meals or share delicious treats like cookies and cupcakes they look forward to every year. It’s a day to express love to those you love.
As Breana shares, “The best Valentine’s Day gift is not always the gift that is most expensive, it’s the gift with the most thought.”
A lot of people don’t even care about Valentine’s Day because they think that instead of showing love on one day it should be the same for everyday you spend with someone you love. Many people hate that they are lonely or single on Valentine’s Day because they see others doing something with their significant other. Savannah J adds, “Valentine’s Day for a single person is hard because a lot of people tend to hate on couples on Valentine’s Day. I think most people feel lonely on Valentine’s Day, especially because they see everybody giving their significant others gifts and having a special moment and day together.”
Here at KHS you could see students carrying around Valentine gifts from not just current love interests but also dear friends. Our FALs students also worked hard to assemble Attendance-Grams and with the help of AVID 10 students distributed them to their peers in their first period on Valentine’s Day.

“My heartfelt thanks to the FALs students and their teachers for their dedication in assembling and preparing the Attendance-Grams, and to the AVID 10 students for their help in delivering them. One of the things I’ve grateful for here at Kenwood are students consistent effort to show up and be present and it’s nice to celebrate this dedication with the distribution of Attendance-Grams,” shares Kenwood attendance coordinator Ms. Lee.
For students that wanted to show their love and appreciation to others throughout the day they could have purchased Tri-M’s Pencil Valentine Grams to have delivered on Valentine’s Day to their special someone.
Many people love the thoughts some put into gifts to express their love but if I would have to say my favorite gift would be the love and time spent with no money involved.
We hope everyone has a Happy Valentine’s Day with people they love.
