Kenwood offers a range of programs that provide students with skills that are beneficial to students post graduation. One of those programs is the Advancement Via Individual Determination or AVID for short. AVID assists students in meeting their short term to long term SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relatable, and Time-Bound) goals.
“Ms. Komorowski (who is in charge of AVID) makes sure that every student is on track with their goals and eventually achieves it to move on and make another short term SMART goal or a long term SMART goal,” shared senior AVID student Victoria Kerner.
Ms. Komorowski has been at Kenwood High School for almost 15 years and has overseen the AVID program for a good decade of that. But recently Ms. K as so many call her was promoted to Assistant Principal of Patapsco High here in Baltimore County.
Her senior AVID students will greatly miss her guidance. “Ms. K has been a mentor to me and I will truly miss her. She’s always been there for me in my times of need and I appreciate her very much,” shares senior Sin J.
AVID has helped many students build their skills to prepare for college. For example, Tutorials assist students with their classes that they are struggling in. Tutorials help students by pairing others in groups to have them help guide you to that answer for that question you are stuck on. This not only helps the student stuck but helping another student with a question by guiding them to that answer helps them build their own learning.
Lastly, Senior AVID student Ashley Bobovsky adds, “Ms K through AVID has helped me learn strategies on how to be a better student by taking better notes and being overall a better student. She will be missed.”
Ms. James and Ms. Lee will be assisting in Ms. K’s AVID classes the rest of this year, as her last day at KHS is this week before she officially starts her new position at Patapsco next week on February 3. We want to thank Ms. K for all that she has done for KHS and the AVID program and students over the years. She will be greatly missed but we wish her the very best!
