As part of a school initiative to encourage positive behavior, attendance, and stronger academics, Ms. Smith and her leadership team organized a BMX Assembly back on November 4 to celebrate and recognize the successes of KHS students that met the mark on behavior, attendance, and grades. 1200 KHS students were invited to the celebration.
Aside, from rewarding student’s first quarter successes, the assembly’s purpose was to raise awareness about bullying and hate. The host would share stories or facts about his BMX riders when he would introduce them to show off their tricks. As he introduced each ride he’d include information about online bullying, as well as encouraging students to speak up and to say something if they witness any type of bullying occurring.
The BMX assembly was one of the first assembly’s students have attended this school year but hopefully not the last as Ms. Smith hopes to bring more exciting rewards to KHS students for their quarterly successes.
Students found the BMX assembly was an amazing experience with all the cool bike tricks and different challenges that were demonstrated throughout the assembly. A memorable one was when the bikers jumped over Ms. Smith’s head! The crowd of students cheered on Mrs. Smith and congratulated her for being brave enough to let the bikers do crazy and insane challenge with her as an obstacle.
“It was really cool to watch them jump over Ms. Smith’s head,” shared senior Star Z. “It was also nice to have a way to celebrate our grades and coming to school.”
Teachers also found it a nice incentive to remind students to work hard, come to school, and make good choices. Mr. Burchett adds, “The assembly was a nice reward t the students who are on their best behaviors and doing a good job at school.”
The BMX Assembly was something new and exciting that Mrs. Smith brought to Kenwood High as part of her hope to encourage positive student choice and engagement. For second quarter, there is an ongoing raffle of prizes for making those good choices and decisions and being present at school. Smartwatches, xbox controllers, all star game jerseys and hats, tablets, purses, and even at the end of second quarter TVs will be raffled off!
Be sure to show up to school and be on track with your grades and behavior to make the best of your time here at KHS!
