One of the much anticipated events of returning to school in the Fall, is a school’s annual Homecoming. Kenwood’s Homecoming week was last week October 21-25.
Kenwood’s tradition often includes a fun daily themed spirit week where the teachers often demonstrate just as much, if not more spirit, than the students. This year’s themes consisted of class color day, soccer mom verse bbq dad day, pink day, twin day, and Friday’s KHS day.
Other anticipated events often include the pep rally before the big football game and parade that follows on Saturday morning. Then there’s some’s favorite event of homecoming-the Homecoming Dance!
The Homecoming football game kicked off Friday night against Woodlawn High at 6:30 pm. Our Bluebirds took home the victory, beating Woodlawn 45-18! The parade followed Saturday morning at 10 am. KHS’s Color Guard lead the parade from the school with various KHS organizations and teams making up the middle of the parade and KHS’s football team and cheerleaders bringing up the back of the parade as they made their way through the local neighborhood and back to the stadium around 11am.
The talk leading up to the dance had everyone buzzing with excitement. Friend groups plan their group outfits and picture locations and couple jump on the growing trend of planning on how to ask their significant other to the dance. A growing trend across the country for high school homecomings is to ask your date with a cleverly written sign on a posterboard to be your date for the dance. Kenwood like every other high school in the country, had its fair share of sign proposals.
Homecoming is a beloved tradition students look forward to while in high school. Kenwood junior Savannah Jones states, “I’m feeling pretty good about homecoming but I haven’t heard much talk about it. I think socializing with friends and the gym all decorated makes the overall night more enjoyable and memorable.”
The dance was 7:00-10:00 on Saturday night. This year’s theme for the dance was Disco Glow Night.
Junior Natalie Sullens adds, “Homecoming creates a more memorable high school experience because students tend to feel more involved with the school as they make the choices for things like the theme and dress code for the dance.”
For Kenwood freshmen this was their first homecoming. It’s often a rite of passage that young high schoolers anticipate as they begin their high school journey. Freshmen Jannat Sajid claims, “I’m really excited about Homecoming this year! It’s a time when the entire school comes together to show their spirit and support for their teams. The excitement leading up to the football game, the creativity and fun of spirit week, the energy of the pep rally, the pride of the parade, and the joy of the dance all contribute to a sense of unity and belonging.”
We hope the KHS community enjoyed their homecoming experience.
