After a rough beginning to the season, Kenwood’s soccer girls have been more determined than ever to put in some wins. Replacing nine graduating seniors last year with newly incoming freshman, the players have had to learn how to work as a team in a way that works best for them. And whether it was summer camp, pre-season, or extra bonding experiences, the girls have certainly gotten to know each other and represent a team together beyond just the field.
The KHS Girls Soccer Team has had many inconveniences, as well as successes that came along with the creation of the team this fall. To keep up the good work after preseason, the girls practice every school day, 3-5pm unless it is in everyone’s best interest to get some rest. Usually this is just to recover from a previous game the night before, but then they are right back to it.
Junior Olivia Wollschlager, the goalkeeper, and speaking captain of the team has been one of the most important players on the field this year, working hard and mostly succeeding to defend the back of the net. “I hope to gain a group of people I can trust and grow with. I hope I can continue to help others on the team get better. I also want to win our games and be the best team we can be,” Wollschlager adds.
Freshman #17, Abigail Wollchlager has also been a highlight on the team this season, for more than just being a captain’s little sister. Abby has been a phenomenal addition to the team, and “has taken charge of the center of the field, already helping to orchestrate multiple scoring opportunities,” shares Coach Gabby Tomasura.
Nonetheless, (Abby) Wollchlager has become important to her teammates off the field as well. “I thought it would be a lot scarier, but it was pretty easy to get to know and be friends with everyone,” she admitted when considering her expectations vs the reality of being a freshmen on the KHS girls soccer team.
With the playoff part of the season left, every player is determined to rack in more wins- in order to pay off for all of their hard work. Making an effort to connect with each other as teammates, as well as friends has put the girls in a position to move forward successfully, and make up for some losses earlier this year. With the right teamwork, as well as support from each other, great things should be expected from the KHS soccer girls finishing out this fall.
Playoffs begin next week! We wish our girls soccer team the best!
