It is the end of another school year and with the end of every school year comes award recognitions but also good byes as teachers sometimes move or decide to retire, as well as saying goodbye to our graduating class of seniors.
This year’s senior class was awarded over $8.5 million dollars in university-based scholarships and grants. Just in the AVID senior class, the students earned over 3.5 Million Dollars in Scholarships and Grants. Many of them received full scholarships for four years. Over 25% of our students will be attending CCBC for FREE! Others are matriculating to over 60 colleges throughout the US including colleges in Vermont, Louisiana, Kansas, California, Indiana, North and South Carolina, NJ, Florida and Georgia. We had 55 students accepted to various HBCU’s throughout the country.
Because of the fee waiver, our senior class submitted 1400 applications. Many schools cost anywhere from $25 to $75 per application. The fee waiver allowed our students to apply to schools they otherwise would not have due to the cost of the application alone.
It’s not just the seniors that are leaving Kenwood behind but several teachers are retiring to begin the next chapters of their lives too. A school can become like a second family to a teacher and whether it’s their first or last school family, they will always hold a special place in a teacher’s heart.
We will miss all of our teachers that are moving onto next chapters next Fall as some are moving on to other positions in education and some are leaving education. This year’s retirements include:
Besides next chapters and good byes there’s always much to celebrate at the end of the year. Throughout the year teachers and staff are often recognized for their achievements. The Chamber of Commerce recognizes a teacher and support staff each year. The teacher nominee was Jimmy Roeder. Kenwood’s BCPS Teacher of the Year Nominee was Lindsay Mariner. Both teachers work hard to support the students, programs, and staff here at KHS. Congratulations on their well deserved recognition and thanks for all you do!
We wish those moving on the best and the rest look forward to new beginnings with the restart of school next Fall.
