The spring sports season concludes throughout the month of May. Baseball, girls lacrosse and boys lacrosse all had great seasons this year.
Baseball had an 8-8 record lost a heartbreaker in the regional semifinals 2-1 to Parkville. Their season highlight was a doubleheader win vs school rival Dundalk.
Girls Lacrosse had a 7-7 record and advanced all the way to the Regional Finals at home. The top players were Makenzie Kerner and Olivia Wollschlager who both had 50 goals and Makenzie topped 150 goals for her career!
Boys lacrosse had a 5-8 record with a loss in the regional semifinals. The highlight of their season was a win over rival Parkville. There top players were Braden Jones and Khalime Truell.
Allied Softball had a great season with a 3-1-1 record.
Our various runners wrapped up their running for KHS with outdoor track this Spring. Athletes find running track to be an excellent form of exercise that provides lots of physical and mental health benefits. Some students between cross country in the fall, indoor track in the winter, and outdoor track in the Spring will run only a season or two while others may run all year in all three. For outdoor track students can do up to 4 events per meet. This year’s track athletes celebrated many successes.
The sports year concludes with the annual Sports Awards Banquet. This year there were 103 KHS student athletes to receive the Mind in Motions recognition which is carrying a 3.25 GPA or higher. Twenty seven athlete participated in 3 sports during the 2023-2024 school year.
The Super K Award goes to student athletes who get 8 or more varsity letters during their high school athletic career. Khalime Truell, Makenzie Kerner, and Cameron Baker earned that award this year.
The Derek Maki Leadership Award and Scholarship was established in honor of former Athletic Director Derek Maki in recognition of 13 years of exemplary service to the athletic program at Kenwood High School. Mr. Maki’s selfless dedication to Kenwood Athletics has positively impacted the lives of thousands of student athletes over the years. This year’s recipient was Gabe Priet.
The Neil Rivers Memorial Award and Scholarship is given in honor and memory of former Kenwood Student-Athlete Neil Rivers. Neil was a standout soccer player, wrestler, and baseball player in his athletic career at Kenwood. Neil lost his life in an act of senseless violence after his high school years at Kenwood. This award is given to a Senior Athlete who best exemplifies Neil’s character traits of integrity, dedication, strong work ethic and commitment to his school and teams. This year’s recipient was Lucas Scheuerman.
Other athletes recognized at the banquet were Chris Nwachkwu for the Boosters Male Athletic Award and Scholarship, Mackenzie Green for the Boosters Female Athletic Award and Scholarship, Austin Mbuyi for the Blanche Drennan Outstanding Male Athlete Award, and Makenzie Kerner for the Blanche Drennan Outstanding Female Athlete.
We look forward to sports returning for the Fall season. Fall tryouts start on August 14.
