Poet Angelina Dehn and Kenwood graduate artist Julissa Rodriquez are our feature of the week on the Creative Corner this week. Julissa’s artwork was also featured at Hannah’s Cafe in Towson, MD.

Dinner Time

Chop! 

 The smell of soup. 

Sounds of labor in the kitchen. 

Butterflies in the windows. 

I hear a knock, and footsteps retreating. 

A creaking door and a question.  

Silence grows as I look over. 

Splatters of crimson like confetti. 

My mind goes blank.  

Screams accompany holiday cheers. 

A person walks in. 

I feel disoriented as I look around. 

The kitchen, red. 

My mouth, covered. 

Soup boiling. 

The person comes closer, walking into the room. 

I can’t move. 

Frozen in place with braids to a chair. 

My mind, wavering. 

A set of eyes fluttering in the corner.  

The person reaches for me. 

Grabbing my arm and looking into my eye. 

Talking directly to my soul, 

“Dinners ready” I hear as everything disappears.
