Grace Pullum, an extraordinary young woman who sought to create a safe and positive environment for students reflection and creativity, organized a Black History Month Assembly during her time at Kenwood as a student here. During the 2022-2023 school year, she returned as a teacher and decided to formally establish the club.
Senior Elijan Dangerfield has been the student leader behind this year’s Black Student Union. He worked with Cierra Bullock, Maya Aviles, and N’Naya Simmons to put up the bulletin boards and mini mural with Ms. Williams last month for Black History Month.
They have also been trying to plan open mic nights but are looking for student participants. However, despite the BSU’s mission to promote the unity and solidarity of Black students, attendance remains low. Ms Williams articulated the importance of getting involved with Kenwood’s BSU, stating, “Teachers and students should want to have productive and have fun places for creating new ideas and events for the building, as well as sharing positive news and information.”
The BSU tends to meet on Monday and/or Friday. Students can also join on schoology with code: Z5NC-T37F-727BC. The next potential open mic is April 12 as long as students sign up to help plan it and participate.
Unity, solidarity, and excellence are just a few of the virtues promoted by the Black Student Union. Get involved and be a part of this new school organization.
