“New year , New Me “ is a common mantra everyone in the world likes to say when New Year comes around . Is the new year another chance to do something that you didn’t accomplish last year ? Is New year all about fresh starts and looking towards the future? What is it about a new year that motivates people to want to better themselves?
Student Makayla S shares, “ ‘New year New Me’ means something that I would do differently than last year. For me it was to start going out and coming more out of my shell . My new year goal is to improve my mental health and find a job.”
At the high school age, many students at this point in life share the new year goal to find a job. The focus to improve one’s mental or physical health is a common new year’s goal for all ages. For some a new year could mean getting into shape, eating healthier, going to see a therapist , or even picking up a new hobby. Here, at KHS, some students’ goal for the new year is to get better grades or plan to get better in their particular sport.
Kenwood junior, Jaylen J has a different goal for the new year. “I want to get my license.!” He’s probably not the only KHS student hoping to add getting a driver’s license to his 2024 accomplishments.
If there was no new year, how would we keep ourselves on track or improve ourselves? It would just feel like we are repeating our lives over and over again but a new year feels like a second chance to do something different or better.
Teachers, just like students, make goals for the new year. But whereas, students are looking to improve their grades, get their first jobs and cars, teachers goals are more about moves and relationships and career goals.
Kenwood Mr.Kern says his long term goals are to get in shape and “be the best husband” he can be and spend more time with family. For his short term, he hopes to move this year. He adds, “Very confident I can do well with my goals except moving. It’s expansive out there!”
KHS students and teachers both hope to reach some goals with this new start with the new year. You may have your own goal, too and maybe you completed your goals or are carrying them over from last year. If you find yourself stuck on some goals, maybe start thinking about short term ones and later after you’ve reached those, try to set a long term goal. Maybe you plan to get a job or maybe plan to ask someone out that you’ve liked for so long. No matter what the goal is, best of luck on achieving it in 2024!
