Kenwood Starts Forensics Club
March 14, 2022
Kenwood’s new Forensics Club advised by Ms. Fulcher provides students with exciting opportunities to become engaged in the field of communication.
The club meets in room 137, typically on Tuesdays; although, Ms. Fulcher tries to meet with the students when they are available due to the small size of the club. The club is also open for anyone to join and are recruiting new members.
Forensics is the term that was used to refer to rhetorical speaking by philosopher Aristotle; it is used to persuade, educate, or entertain an audience. This gives the students a chance to develop research, argumentation, speechwriting, oratory and performance skills that are needed to become a lawyer, educator, politician, or performer.
“The forensics club is essentially a communications-based club. If you look up what a forensics club is, it can take on many different forms of public speaking like persuasive speeches, debate, mock trial, poetry, read alouds. So, our club, because it’s so small, I just made it under the umbrella of communications so that it fulfills whatever the students want it to be in that field,” shares Ms. Fulcher.
The club has had one major event so far for their first year. Back on December 21, the club hosted guest speaker, Kathryne Sandusky in a Q & A in the school library. Ms. Sandusky is an associate communications director for the National Network of Public Health Institutes. She has experience with many forms of public speaking and the field of communications.
Former journalism student senior Nora Jillianos, hosted the event for the Forensics Club. Nora said the experience was eye opening for her. This is because she says she’s generally an awkward person, “So I don’t normally do things like that, but it was a fun and educational experience!”
The club has another big event coming up which is a field trip to Towson University in April to sit in on a Communications course.
