February 23, 2022
Cheerleaders from Virginia State University came today to Kenwood High School in honor of our HBCU day for our Black History Month Spirit Week. They came today to give a teaser of their performance they will be doing at the CIAA cheerleading competition against other HBCUs.
Not only did they perform for the students, but they shared helpful advice to our students on academic success, time management, and the importance of college!
Several students attended the event including junior Genesis B who shares, “It was empowering seeing the team perform. It made me feel like I want to pursue other activities while attending college.”
Students thought the performance was great and “watching them made me feel like I can conquer the world and do anything!” added sophomore Autumn R who was in attendance.
The VSU student athletes shared many insightful things about college with students in attendance. “We’re student athletes so we’re students before we’re athletes. Our work must be done before we can focus on cheerleading,” shared one of the VSU cheerleaders.
Another cheerleader added to the discussion, reminding Kenwood students, “High school cheer is fun and games, but college cheer is more intense because you’re the face of the school.”
“Attitude is everything and will get you anywhere.”
With VSU’s visit today students got a taste of what college life could consist of with academics, athletics and attitude: the three As the VSU cheerleaders live by. Their coach stated, “You must keep your attitude in check-here, there, and everywhere.”
The cheerleaders left Kenwood students in attendance with great advice for campus life, “Prioritize your time; time management is the focus.” The student athletes stressed , “The way you handle yourself will reflect how your are seen. You have to manage yourself as a business.”
For Kenwood students interested in pursuing their passions and sports in high school, the cheerleaders stressed to “Think about what makes you different from anybody trying to do the same thing as you.”
They left Kenwood students with the message, “Nothing in life that is worth having is easy so live your dream with the expectation that there will be challenges.”
