A Day of Love
February 14, 2022
Each year on February 14 we celebrate Valentine’s Day, the day of love and giving. Some think it’s a cool holiday and look forward to it, while others think it’s silly and commercialized.
Junior Cris S shares, “I think the tradition of Valentines day is pretty cool. You get to show your affection to someone you love. I do feel as though people wait until Valentine’s Day to show they care when they can do that any other time so that’ s the only downside to the holiday.”
While some enjoy it, others see it as just a commercialized way for businesses to make money. Amyah D shares, “I believe Valentine’s Day is a day where people are able to give gifts to their love ones and family members, but it is can also be seen as a marketing stunt. A lot of stores sales go up during Valentine’s Day with different promotions and giveaway that bring people in.”
Valentine’s Day is a day often thought of as a day for love of infatuations whether it’s dating or marriage. But Valentine’s Day is also about showing your love to friends and family. Junior Carmyn H shares, “I like Valentine’s Day. I think people make the holiday too much about romantic love, so single people feel like they aren’t included. It’s a day to celebrate platonic love too. My mom used to buy us new charms for our bracelets, but now she gets me and my sister candy baskets and we have dinner.”
Valentine’s Day can be either a negative or positive holiday. “I think everyone has the power to make it negative or positive. You can spend it with someone else or by yourself; you can make it enjoyable either way. Valentine’s Day is about love, and you can love yourself just as much as you love someone else. I also think Valentine’s Day is super exploited and most commercial things take away the real meaning from it,” adds sophomore Autumn R.
Valentine’s Day can be a holiday that a lot of people look forward to but also one that a lot of people dread. Many think that if they aren’t in a relationship, then they can’t have an enjoyable Valentine’s day, but that’s not really true. Spending Valentine’s Day with family and friends is one way to enjoy the holiday and spread some love. You could also show love to yourself and take a break or treat yourself.
Here at Kenwood we’re using the day to spread love to all. Kenwood’s SGA delivered a cup of goodies to all staff members. Teachers across the building with their students decorated their doors to represent spreading love this month, along with Black History Month, putting together some creative displays. Students could also purchase Valentines from SGA to show their love and appreciation to others in the building.
