School counselors are the backbone of any good and healthy school. With all this schoolwork and responsibilities on students, who will be there to talk to them and help guide them on their way. School Counselors help students with mental health, schoolwork, planning for their future, or are just there for someone to talk to.
Without school counselors, students would be lost without a compass to guide them. This is why school counselors deserve to be appreciated and celebrated during this week of National School Counselors Week but every week of the school year!
School counselors create a safe space for students to be open with themselves. Counselors make a big difference in every student’s life. They not only help you academically, but they often understand the mental health struggles of their students better than most. Kenwood High School sophomore Sam T values the relationship he has with his school counselor. He shares, “My school counselors have helped me a lot over the years. She understood what my weaknesses were and what my strengths were. My respect is high for school counselors.”
Here at Kenwood we are lucky to have seven different counselors: Mr. Grubka, Ms. Kramer, Ms. Strzegowski, Ms. Holland, Ms. Franklin, Ms. Barton, and Ms. Nixon. Sophomore Autumn R appreciates what Kenwood’s counselors do for her and her peers. “Last year transitioning to ninth grade with virtual learning was super tough for me. I was really struggling in more than half of my classes during the second semester. But Ms. Strzegowski reached out to me before the semester ended and guided me through getting my grades up so I could pass my classes. I ended up finishing the last quarter with As, Bs, and Cs,” she shares.
As we celebrate school counselors this week, it is important to appreciate our school counselors here at Kenwood. They deserve as much recognition as any teacher, administrator, nurse, janitor, and more. Remember to thank your school counselor for what they have done to help you with life and school.
Our school counselors don’t only make changes to our schedule, listen to our troubles when we need a sounding board, but they are a guide on our way to personal and professional success.
