Student Musicians Qualify for State Competition

After months of preparation, 13 instrumental music students performed Feb. 23 at the annual Maryland State District 7 Solo/Ensemble Festival with four earning spots at the next level of competition.

Violin soloist Aneirah Hanna, clarinet soloist Taylor Mutter, bass clarinet soloist Angela Atkisson and the violin duet of Jennifer Ayers and Aneirah Hanna received a rating of “1” or superior for their performances at the competition, which was held at Dumbarton Middle School in Towson. They will participate in the state competition in May.

The following students received a rating of “2” or excellent for their performances:

  • Jennifer Ayers, violin solo
  • Abigail Bruzdzinski, violin solo
  • Winifred Okereke, viola solo
  • Ashby Gambrah, Tyler Melka, Taylor Soutar, mixed instrument trio
  • Ashby Gambrah, alto saxophone solo
  • Cameron Campbell, tuba solo
  • Heather Barthalow and Bryanna Haley, flute duet
  • Heather Barthalow, flute solo

The following students received a rating of “3” for their performance:

  • Daniel Igomigoh and Kayla Williams, violet duet.

In addition to the pieces they select to play, students are required to prepare five major scales, as well as a chromatic scale, to play from memory.

The soloists were accompanied by pianist Margaret McGilvaray from Columbia, Md.
